Re: H1N1 Flu shot

I got papers from the school this week to see if I wanted it for my kids. I've decided to go ahead and let them get it at school. It's free and available. The only thing I'm worried about is getting it for Zoe. She is terrified of shots. I don't know if it would be better for her to do it at school or wait until I can be there with her.

I have seen nothing, I am guessing our schools must not be doing it. ARe they giving seasonal flu shots too Karen or do you still have to make dr appts for the other shot?

She may surprise you and be totally okay at school around her friends. I know a bumped elbow here at home can result in an hour of crying and whining but recovers much more quickly around her friends. Last night at soccer Saiges mouth crashed with another kids head, she bit her lip pretty good. She cried for a minute and when she saw her friends looking at her she toughed it up, wiped her eyes and went back in.

The boy who died here this morning was a friend of my Mom's grandson, he was 5, and had several other conditions.

They aren't offering it in the schools here, haven't heard a word.

That's what I'm thinking, too. She is very much in love with her teachers so maybe that will help.

They aren't giving the seasonal shot at school, but Quinn had a well-child appt. recently and got it then. Zaven and Caly have school physicals scheduled tomorrow so they can do the swim team, so I'm thinking they'll be able to get it then. That just leaves Zoe. I can't remember if she had it at her last Dr. appt. She had one recently and got a shot, but I dont' remmeber which shot.

That's so sad. It's a hard choice when your kids have other health problems. On the one hand you worry about an adverse reaction to the shot. On the other hand, you worry about the risks of the actual disease. I usually go for the vaccination, but I can understand the hesitancy.

He probably would have gotten the vacc, if it was available. He has been in the hospital for over a month, on a vent. They said it was pneumonia, he had severe asthma, never mentioned H1N1 until last week.

I've had quite a few friends with the H1N1, and the shot isnt even here yet.

I have alot of friends that were friends of the 5 year old who died. There is so many conflicting stories about him... It just breaks my heart. they were still told it was a strain of Type A flu. Here is the story in our local paper
http://news.mywebpal.com/news_tool_v2.cfm?show=localnews&pnpID=974&NewsID=968856&CategoryID=20207&on=1

I also know a kid who had strep, type A, another type and broncitous (sp), plus something else- It took him night on 3 weeks, but he got well and was never hospitilized.

our flu here in town seems to have almost ran its course, Pert near everyone I know has had it. Even some who got the normal flu shot, cause they got a differnt strain that was not in the shot this year. LOL

I spoke to his Mom today, when I brought food, he did NOT have H1N1, the health dept says it was, but TCH said No. It was regular old flu...
She also said he had NO health issues, the asthma started after he got sick. Poor baby, they put him on ECMO for a month, noone recovers from that....

It's so sad. And it's scary to think that kids are so fragile... that people are so fragile.

Zoe got it in school yesterday and she hasn't even run a fever or complained. Well, she complained that it's the most painful shot in the whole world, but she hasn't complained about feeling bad from it. I'm anxious for Zaven and Caly to get theirs because I've been putting off Zaven's allergy shots. He can't get the flu shot within three days of the alergy shot, but I don't know when they're going to give his flu shot.
