I never would have known that either! LOL! So as Canadians, I guess we can surmise that it was like the food fights in the cafeteria in highschool. One side stood north of the Mason Dixon line and threw Oatmeal, the other side stood to the south and threw grits.
Oh and I had no idea what grits were either until I googled them. 
This American history lesson makes Canadians look like barbarians! When we had our rebellions in 1837 they armed themselves with pitchforks instead of food!
